In order to learn how humans evolved to speak, Dr. Erich Jarvis studies song-learning birds. By using a variety of techniques across many disciplines, he hopes to gain a broad understanding of the mechanisms that underlie vocal learning and eventually learn how their brains, and ours, have evolved to produce this complex behavior. Dr. Jarvis hopes these findings will help shed light on speech disorders in humans and restore voices silenced by disability or disease.
