Applying for and receiving individual fellowships, scholarships, or other award opportunities is a great way to support your studies, research, or professional development and demonstrate your communication skills when applying for future opportunities. Funding opportunities are available from government institutions, colleges and universities and nonprofit funding organizations. In this session, a panel of nonprofit funding professionals will discuss why and when it is beneficial to apply for funding, examples of available funding opportunities and strategies for making your application competitive.

Deputy Executive Director and Director of Grant Programs, American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR)
Odette van der Willik is the Deputy Executive Director and Director of Grant Programs at the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) where she develops and oversees the organization’s series of grant programs, including the support of early and mid-career scientists, physicians and medical students in the fields of aging research and geriatric medicine. She also oversees Coordinating Centers funded by the National Institute on Aging.
Jessica M. Biddinger
National Senior Director, Research and Grants Administration, American Heart Association
Jessica M. Biddinger is the National Senior Director, Research and Grants Administration at the American Heart Association. She has more than a decade of experience in research administration both in academia and the non-profit sphere. She began work in grants management at the American Urological Association as well as within the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and School of Nursing prior to joining the American Heart Association (AHA). Within the AHA, Jessica and her team oversee research applications, peer review, communications and alumni engagement.
Careen Campbell Allen
Diversity Programs Manager, American Society of Hematology (ASH)
Careen Campbell Allen is the Diversity Programs Manager at the American Society of Hematology (ASH). She has worked extensively in the non-profit sector in governance, awards and education. In her current role, Careen helps trainees navigate opportunities on the Minority Recruitment Initiative (MRI) awards pathway. Originally from Jamaica via Greenwich, CT, Careen is currently pursuing a Master’s in Nonprofit Management. Outside work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, family, friends and toy Poodle.
Allison (Allie) Samis
Awards Program Manager, American Society of Hematology (ASH)
Allison (Allie) Samis is an Awards Program Manager at the American Society of Hematology (ASH). She has been working in the non-profit field for over a decade. In her role, Allie helps trainees navigate the award application cycle and volunteer opportunities. A Philadelphia, PA native, Allie holds a bachelor’s degree from Penn State and a master's in Public Administration. Outside work, she spends her time with her husband, two little girls and rescue dog.
