Utilizing and Generating Scholarship from Research Training Program Activities: Employing Asset-based Approaches for Design and Scholarship

A recent NSF report showed that for the decade from 2011 to 2020, STEM degree production among Black or African American students was the same or reduced as a percentage of total degrees awarded for four of five STEM-related fields. Arguably, the successes often cited at the program level have yet to translate to broader impacts on engagement outcomes. In addition, while many programs have done well in providing technical training, they might have yet to realize their fullest potential in other areas critical to success, as their design remains uninformed by relevant research, often conducted in the social and behavioral sciences.
This introductory workshop previews the three-day Understanding Interventions Dissemination Workshop on applying strength-based theoretical frames in STEM-related training. Participants will gain an appreciation of the impact of these frames in informing program design, assessment, and dissemination. Participants will be encouraged to continue engagement through future 2-3 day workshops organized by Understanding Interventions that Broaden Participation in Science and the Louis Stokes Regional Center of Excellence for the Study of STEM Interventions.
Learning Outcomes
- After participating in this workshop, participants will be more informed about asset-based approaches and how to incorporate them into their training program design.
- Participants will also be more knowledgeable about Understanding Interventions and its many resources as tools for continued education, hands-on training, networking, and dissemination.

Anthony DePass, PhD
Director, Understanding Interventions that Broaden Participation in Science
Dr. Anthony DePass is the Co-Director for the Louis Stokes Regional Center of Excellence for the Study of STEM interventions, and Director of Understanding Interventions that Broaden Participation in Science (UI). The annual UI conferences serve as a major venue for the dissemination of scholarship related to STEM interventions research, as well as facilitating training activities for evaluators, interventions researchers, and program administrators. Dr. DePass is the Publisher of the UI Journal, and over the last three decades, he has led and evaluated several externally funded training and development programs including, NIH MARC, RISE, BRIDGES, IMSD, IRACDA; and NSF ADVANCE, LSAMP, SSTEM, HBCU-UP, IUSE and Noyce Teacher Scholarship program.
Shanta Outlaw
Executive Director, Understanding Interventions that Broaden Participation in Science
Shanta Outlaw is the program manager for the Understanding Interventions Conference and Programs. She is responsible for the planning, execution, and management of program and conference activities, including the annual meeting, satellite meetings, outreach, and training activities of UI. Shanta has been managing and directing student training and academic support programs for more than a decade. As program coordinator and manager of the Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) MBRS-RISE program, the ECSU Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) program, the Long Island University, Brooklyn MBRS-RISE program, national science interventions conference, Understanding Interventions that Broaden Participation in Science, and faculty development ADVANCE program, she has played a key role in the progression of STEM student’s academic and career experiences from secondary to post-doctoral levels.
